Today is a cool date . . . 09.09.09. For our family it's even cooler. Today is Daniel's (our oldest) birthday. It's hard to believe that he's 11 years old today. In some ways, it seems like only a couple years since we were in the hospital waiting all day as Amy labored to introduce Daniel to the world. In other ways, it seems so long ago that he has to be 20 by now (sometimes he thinks he is 20).
This morning I drove back from Walmart with his birthday present I heard on the radio that the Las Vegas wedding chapels were experiencing huge numbers for weddings today 09.09.09 at 09:09 AM and PM. So I thought I'm going to hurry back to the house and take Daniel's picture on his birthday 09.09.09 @ 09:09 AM.

What were you doing on 09.09.09 @ 09:09 AM or PM?

This is for my non-Facebook friends. I have been a very lazy blogger lately. It seems that Facebook has taken the place of my blog. I tend to forget that some of you don't have Facebook. So, here's a video of our oldest son Daniel making his singing debut. Here he is auditioning for the children's ministry praise team at our church (Bethlehem Church, Gastonia, NC). As one of my friends said on Facebook . . . Check out Daniel Moore . . . He's singing Journey for an audition at CHURCH! Enjoy . . . .

Funny thing happened this afternoon. David pinched his finger in the front door. No, that wasn't really the funny part. The funny part came after he stopped crying when he said, "Dad can I call Daniel and tell him I've got gangblue!" To which I replied laughingly, "You've got what?" "Gangblue . . . see," showing me his bruised finger. I guess he's heard us tell Daniel that he's going to get gangrene (I had to look up how to spell it) if he didn't keep a wound clean. So, it made sense to him . . . and to me . . . David's got gangblue!

I know I've been a horrible blogger lately. It's probably due to my feeling like a bear. I really need to get rid of some of this winter weight. It's made me a bit lazy when it comes to keeping up my blog. For those of you who've seen these pictures on Facebook I apologize in advance. These are for my non-Facebook friends - a few shots of my girls . . . .

Who is John Rosemond?
|
|
Wednesday, 18 February 09 - 10:52 PM (GMT -05:00) By Mark Moore in Family |

WARNING: Long post . . . but it does have a little humor along the way.
Who is John Rosemond? If you would have asked me that question on Sunday of this week I would have answered, "I have no idea, I've never heard of him!" That was before I heard him speak at Grace Anglican Church on Monday night.
The guy is a best selling author on the subject of children and parenting. He's been on GMA, 20/20, O'Reilly, The View and Focus on the Family. He travels 9 months of the year speaking all across the country . . . and he lives right here in Gastonia!
Why did we go hear him speak? We went because Amy's mother bought us tickets. What? Your mother-in-law bought you tickets to a parenting seminar? Yes, she had read his latest book, she was his kids nurse when they were little and the proceeds went to support the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Gastonia.
Was I excited about going? Not really, after all it was being held in the chapel of a local funeral home! I told Daniel before we left that we were going to this parenting conference at the funeral home so we could learn how not to kill our kids! Maybe I did need a parenting seminar after a statement like that?
I was a little more comforted when we walked in and saw one of our neighbors, but when I saw Mariah's Sunday School teacher I thought, "Oh no, is she hear to learn how to deal with my child?"
Enough of the small talk . . . the seminar was incredible! It was just common sense stuff. No tips, tricks and formulas for raising kids, just common sense stuff. Really, it could be described as "old fashioned" parenting methods. He talked a lot about how psychology had ruined parenting in the last 35-40 years. He also reminded us, more than once, that he was a psychologist.
Ok, I know I've lost most of the people who started reading this, but if you've stuck it out this far, I'll give you one of the things he shared with us. "Let your yes be yes and your no be no!" Sounds biblical? Well, it is. Jesus said it in Matthew 5:37. He asked the question, "How many of you knew that when your parents said something you knew they meant it?" I think every hand in the room went up. He then asked, "Do your children know that your yes means yes and your no means no?" ONE hand went up! We bargain with our kids way too much!
He ended the seminar with this statement, "When you walk into the house tonight call the kids together and declare, 'It's over!'" Our kids were at Amy's parents. So I walked in the door and declared, "Kids, it's over! If you don't like it, take it up with Mimi because she paid for it!"
If you want to know more about John Rosemond you can check him out at www.rosemond.com.
It's that time of year . . .

Basketball season . . . which means we have 3 kids involved with 3 different teams! That means 3 different games each Saturday. It also means 3 different practice times each week. The good thing about that is that they are all on Thursday evening. I don't know what it's going to be like when we have 5 kids doing 5 different things.

Two weeks ago David scored 18 points in his game and Daniel scored 4. That was really good for both of them. The funny thing was I asked David when we got out of the car, "how many points are you going to score?" to which he stoically replied, "probably all of 'em." After he scored the first 8 points of the game it was like someone on drugs. He couldn't get enough. His coach kept telling him to pass, which he did, but the lure of the basket was just too much.

Now to Mackenzie . . . she's our little cheerleader. She's on the cheerleading "squad". It's not a cheerleading "team". She's quick to let you know it's a "squad". What makes it a squad rather than a team? Who knows. She's just happy to have a stage for everyone to see her!
I'm glad they are involved in sports at our church. It's good to see them interaciting with other kids their age . . . even if they're dreaming of being the next Shaq . . . or is it Okafor!
2 Families . . . 12 children!

Yes, I can count. I know there are 13 children in this picture, but one of them is a cousin. Yesterday we spent a few hours in Weaverville, NC (our former home). Our friends and former neighbors, Dirk and Julie Helmling, were visiting family in WNC so we met up at McDonald's so our children could play together for a few minutes. I'm sure the other families in the Weaverville McDonald's wished they had gone to one of the Asheville McDonald's. Our two families basically fllled up the play area!

The two "babies" Mariah and Ezekiel. Two families, twelve children, five adoptions . . . I guess you can figure out that the Helmlings have adopted four (all from Liberia, Africa).
Boxes for Christmas

I've decided that we're just going to get some boxes for Christmas. I don't know if it's just my kids, but it seems like they will play with a box much longer than what came in it. We can get something in the mail that comes in a box and the kids have a new "toy" for a couple hours.
Anyway, I know this is not a normal box, but this Lincoln Log box has brought hours of fun to our house over the past year. Almost daily Mariah is either sitting in it or walking around with it on her head! I guess she likes the way her voice sounds echoing in it. Please feel free to adopt this money saving Christmas idea for your own family . . . Merry Christmas!

Daddy Day Care!

Monday, 01 December 08 - 07:44 AM (GMT -05:00) By Mark Moore in Family |

Today begins a week of Daddy Day Care at the Moore home. Amy left for 9 days in Honduras this morning. I'm so glad that she will be a part of a team loving on 465 orphan children this week. It's going to be awesome for her because she's never been on a mission trip alone. Most of her international mission trip experience has been watching after her own 5 children. I'm excited to hear her stories and see her pictures as her week progresses in Honduras.
Since Amy's in Honduras, you know what that means for me . . . I've got our 5 kids - alone. Don't be alarmed! We'll be fine. We've got school to do and Daniel and Madison are old enough to be a big help. Amy did all the laundry before she left and we had company this week so the house is relatively clean. I'll try to keep the blog updated this week to let you know how our week is going. I'll post some pictures like Amy does on her blog while I'm in Honduras. I don't know if she'll get to post pictures this week, but I do look for her to have a little time to update her blog this week. You can check out her adventures here - http://moorefam7.terapad.com.
Enjoying our last Sunday of Daylight Savings Time

If you didn't already know by now, next Sunday we go back on standard time. It takes a couple weeks for me to get used to it getting dark early. I like it when it gets dark at 9:00 p.m., but I have never really understood the daylight savings time deal. Anyway, we took advantage of the 70+ degree weather this afternoon and headed to Martha Rivers Park. It was a bit crowded, but we had fun. Below is a family photo I took this afternoon to remember our time. BTW, the little "blob" on the right side of the photo is Darby our 11 year old Fox Terrier. We didn't bring Pedro the cat for the photo. I guess I could have photoshoped him in.

I don't have time to write tonight (seems like that's every night lately), but I thought I would post a photo from our weekend. We had company and took him on a "tour" of Gastonia. I took my camera and snapped a few pictures. I liked this one because its not so "posed". I'll share more photos from the weekend later.

Six years old today. It's hard to believe it's been that long and on the other hand it seems like they should be at least ten. Because of soccer and baseball practice tonight we went to Chucky Cheese's for lunch. It's more fun at lunch because there are not that many people there . . . and the salad bar is fresh!

HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY DANIEL!!!

It's hard to believe that 10 years ago yesterday (09.09) that I drove Amy to the hospital all excited and scared. It was going to be a "new normal" for our family. We were going from 2 to 3. It was a long day of "laboring" and ultimately Daniel was delivered about 10 p.m. by c-section. He's growing up to be a great young man and I'm still as proud of him as I was on the day he was born.
If you are around him in the next couple of weeks, get ready for a bit of magic. He got a new card deck for his birthday and has already learned some really cool tricks. I like card tricks too. So I'm learning with him. Get ready for Moore card tricks!

I know many of you have been praying for Mariah during her recent hospitalization. I wanted to say thanks and share a couple photos. We made it home at 9:00 p.m. tonight and she's back to "normal". I'll write more about the experience tomorrow. I'm too tired and too frustrated to write tonight. More tomorrow . . . .

More Surgery for Mariah

This photo has nothing to do with the title of this post, but because I like putting photos on my posts I chose this one from last month in Honduras. We were sitting on the porch waiting on VBS and and I snapped this shot of Mariah with some Honduran children in La Villa de San Francisco.
Mariah came home from Honduras with an ear infection last week. It had nothing to do with Honduras, but when we left the country she had yellow fluid coming out of her right ear. We took her to the ENT doctor here in Gastonia and they put her on some ear drops and then some oral antibiotics.
Because of her implants (I don't exactly know why) she is at risk of developing meningitis from ear infections. When she had her implant surgery the doctor removed her ear tubes. That was a concern for her ENT here in Gastonia.
Well, this afternoon she began to run a fever again. Amy called Chapel Hill and they said get her here ASAP. She has a massive ear infection and they decided to hospitalize her for IV antibiotics and schedule her for surgery for more ear tubes on Wednesday.
If you've read this far, please say a prayer for Mariah and our family. It looks like I'll be going to Chapel Hill tomorrow. I'll post an update as soon as I have one.

Yesterday we went to Weaverville for a cookout with some friends. We had a great time at the cookout, but after the cookout we decided to drive by our old house to see if our friends were at home. They were! Woo Hoo.
Robin and Brandon bought our house and they used to come visit us when we live there. It felt kind of weird. It was like they were visiting us! While we were there, Mariah made a new friend, Bailey. Below are some pictures for your enjoyment.

Update on Mackenzie
|
|
Friday, 06 June 08 - 07:38 PM (GMT -05:00) By Mark Moore in Family |
|
Through some twist of fate, good luck or the interference of the Great Physician, Mackenzie had an appointment with the ortho specialist today. Yesterday we were told that they didn't have any openings until August, but they called this morning with an opening at 11:30 a.m.
The doctor said that she had never seen anything like it before. I don't really know if that was a good statement or a bad one, but it was a first for her. It was a tough case because it really looked weird on the X-ray. She was perplexed as to why it seems to be growing and that she has full range of motion with her lower arm. She basically said we didn't have anything to worry about, but she wants us to bring Mackenzie back on one year so that she can take another look at it for "her research".
Maybe it's the Great Physician at work and that's why it's not following typical protocol. Maybe, just maybe God is answering our prayers and the prayers of his other children on Mackenzie's behalf. I often resist over spiritualizing things, but it feels like to me that God is at work. We appreciate your continued prayers. To God be the glory, great things He has done!
My life feels like one long prayer request
|
|
Thursday, 05 June 08 - 10:09 PM (GMT -05:00) By Mark Moore in Family |
|
Right now my life seems like one big prayer request. Some of you remember Mackenzie had a cast on her arm last summer due to a trampoline accident.
Her doctor told us it needed to be looked at in a year so we made her an appointment to be seen by an orthopedic doctor here in Gastonia. On top of the bad news out of Tegucigalpa today, the doctor told Amy that the growth plate didn't look right on the X-ray. She said it looked like bone had formed on it rather than cartilage. So she is being referred to a specialist in Charlotte.
What does that mean? Worst case scenario is that her arm will not grow anymore from the elbow down. Another option may be surgery but that's not a guarantee either. So, I'm asking those of you who know the Great Physician to talk to Him about Mackenzie's arm. He can heal her arm if that's his plan for her.
Before any of this transpired today, I was reminded of the words of James when he said, "Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing." James 1:2-4
I will keep you posted . . . it looks like we will not be able to see a specialist until August.
